Terms and conditions

What we promise, and what we ask.

The terms for using Balsm: the website, the Balsm app, Balsm Pro and Balsm Cloud. Written plainly, with the most important parts first.

Last updated: 30 September 2026

About these terms

These terms apply to all of Balsm: the balsm.health website, the Balsm app, Balsm Pro and Balsm Cloud (together, “the services”). By using the services you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use them.

Balsm is an open-source healthcare technology project based in Egypt. In these terms, “Balsm”, “we” and “us” mean the Balsm team that runs the services.

Not medical advice, and not an emergency service

  • Balsm helps you organise your health information. It does not diagnose, treat or give medical advice, and it doesn't replace a doctor, pharmacist or other qualified professional.
  • Always follow your healthcare provider's instructions about your medications and care. Reminders in the app are an aid, not a guarantee: a notification can be delayed or missed if your device is off, silenced or has notifications turned off.
  • In an emergency, call your local emergency number straight away: 123 in Egypt, 997 in Saudi Arabia, 998 in the UAE.

Who can use Balsm

You must be 18 or older to create an account. Features that let parents or guardians manage a family member's health will come with their own terms.

If you use Balsm Pro for a clinic, pharmacy or other organisation, you confirm you are authorised to do so. That organisation is responsible for how it uses Balsm Pro and for the patient records it keeps, including meeting the healthcare and data-protection laws that apply to it.

Your account

Keep access to your email, Google or Apple account secure, because it is how you sign in to Balsm. You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else has accessed it, sign out your other devices from the app and tell us straight away.

Your information

  • You own the information you add to Balsm. You give us only the permissions we need to store it, sync it and show it back to you, as described in our privacy policy.
  • You are responsible for keeping it accurate. Add information about other people, such as emergency contacts or members of your care team, only when you have a good reason to, and with their permission where it is needed.
  • When you share an emergency card, anyone with the link or QR code can read it until it expires or you revoke it. Share it only with people, and in places, you trust.

Acceptable use

When you use Balsm, don't:

  • break the law, or use Balsm to harm anyone;
  • access, or try to access, another person's account or data;
  • overload, disrupt or try to break the security of our services, except through responsible disclosure to security@balsm.health;
  • upload malicious code, or create accounts by automated means;
  • pretend to be a healthcare provider, or anyone else, when you are not.

Open source

Balsm's source code is published under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 with additional terms. Your rights to use, copy, change and share the code come from that licence, not from these terms, which cover your use of the services we run.

The licence doesn't let you rebrand Balsm or present it as your own, and it doesn't give you the right to use the Balsm name or logo in a way that suggests you are us or that we endorse you.

Other companies' services

Some features rely on services from other companies, such as signing in with Google or Apple, or backing up to Google Drive or iCloud. Their own terms apply when you use them. Links to other websites are provided for convenience, and we are not responsible for their content.

Availability and changes to the services

Some of the services are still in development, and we will keep improving them. We may add, change or remove features, and we will give you notice before a change that significantly affects you. Paid plans, such as parts of Balsm Cloud, will have their own terms that you will see and accept before you pay.

Disclaimers

We work hard to keep Balsm reliable and accurate, but the services are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we don't promise that they will be uninterrupted, free of errors, or suitable for a particular purpose. Keep your own backup of information that matters to you.

Limits on our liability

To the extent the law allows, Balsm is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for decisions about your health made on the basis of information in the services.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud, and nothing in them takes away your rights as a consumer under the law where you live.

Ending your use

You can stop using Balsm and delete your account at any time; our privacy policy explains what happens to your data. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, and we will tell you why unless the law prevents us.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we will update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes, we will tell you in the app before they take effect. If you keep using Balsm after that, you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Egypt, and disputes will be heard by the competent courts in Cairo. If you live in another country, you keep the protections the law there gives you as a consumer.
